Training apprentices helps you and your organisation to deal with skill shortages or high staff turnovers. Here’s our top tips to make your new apprentice/trainee a valuable part of your hospitality team:
Safety first! Ensure a safe working environment for your apprentice / trainee. As an employer, it’s your legal duty to provide a workplace that is free from possible hazards and ensure that all health and safety regulations are fulfilled. Apprentices must be introduced to all safety regulations, and occupational health and safety training in the workplace.
Be welcoming! Encourage your apprentice / trainee to foster good working relations with colleagues. Be sure to introduce new apprentices to staff.
Be supportive and supervise! Apprentices need appropriate levels of supervision. Nominate a workplace supervisor, who can communicate well and is a good role model. Show an ongoing interest with their training efforts.
Be a motivator! Praise should be given in public, while it is better to keep criticism private.
Be a great communicator! Communication is always a two-way process. Important ways to support apprentices are listening, addressing and reacting to their problems and questions. Also, be open to their feedback and criticism. Creating strong internal communication helps you to fix problems as they come up.
Find the fun! A little appropriate humor to lighten the mood is often helpful. A good manager will find a balance between being fun and authoritative. The workplace should be a professional, but enjoyable environment, where you can exercise your authority to ensure that everybody works in a similar professional manner.
Practice what you preach! Set a good example by arriving at work on time, taking pride in a job well done and not getting distracted by personal problems.
